Harris assumes presidential powers while Biden undergoes medical procedure

Vice president makes history, albeit briefly

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Vice President Kamala Harris has made history by becoming the first woman to serve as acting president of the United States.

Harris assumed presidential powers on Friday, November 19, 2021, while President Joe Biden underwent a routine colonoscopy at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Biden transferred power to Harris at 10:10 a.m. EST and regained it at 11:35 a.m. EST, a White House statement said.

Under the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the vice president becomes acting president if the president is unable to discharge the duties of the office.

Harris's brief stint as acting president is a historic moment for the United States. She is the first woman, the first Black person, and the first person of South Asian descent to serve in the role.
